Tim Proffitt, an angry white guy with back problems, who until a few days ago would have been hard to pick out at any Ayn Randian Regressive Racist, tea bagging event seeing as how he is indistinguishable from the multitudinous middle aged macho Archie Bunkers that populate these events, can now enjoy his fifteen minutes of fame. Congratulations, Tim, when you die people will remember you as that guy who stepped not once, but twice on the back of a 23 year old woman after she was tackled to the ground in a violent attack that left the woman, Lauren Valle, with a concussion and other medical problems.
But Mr. Proffitt was not done.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Proffitt (who did not want his face on camera, and thought it better to allow news camera to train on his lap) demanded an apology from the woman for putting her head between his foot and the pavement. Twice.
I know that The Rand Paul campaign has fired this former campaign officer and banned him from future campaign events, but that is not enough. Tim Proffitt is an embarrassment to all men. Everywhere. I know that Jon Stewart is calling for sanity, polite discussion, but it is 2010, and there is no room left in the world for this Neanderthal mentality of guys like Proffit. My advice: try evolution.
Not that this is an isolated incident in the campaign.
Media Matters has recently published a laundry list of right wing violence in this campaign season along that involves death threats, swastikas, a constant visual reminder that “next time they will bring guns” and a militia group associated with the patriot movement that has been arrested and charged with plotting a violent overthrow of the government.
And that is just this election season.
Just how far will forces on the right go to squelch a progressive movement?
Ask yourself: when is the last time that progressives had any real power in this country?
Well, the 1960s witnessed a coming together of groups that protested over and over and over and helped end the war in Vietnam. But consider that, in the five-year period between 1963 and 1968, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr were all killed. Now whether or not you believe they were men with ear pieces and black suits who knew 17 different languages and 17 different forms of kung fu and backroom meetings and exchanges of large cash that led up to the killings of these four men is besides the point.
However it came to pass, the results are the same. The results of those four leaders of American progressive politics being killed in such a short amount of time is that Americans collectively put their tale between their legs, their heads down, and they did what they were told. They cut their hair, joined the middle class, went on a credit binge, and sat passively by as our country continued the same foreign policy we have had since, oh I don’t know, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a foreign policy that can be aptly described as Manifest Destiny’s Child: Invade, Kill, Occupy. Rinse. Repeat.
And now many of these same members of the middle class, seemingly unaware that there is a war being waged by the elite on them, will make their first trip to our nations’ capitol this weekend, not to call for an end to out illegal, expensive and immoral wars, but to hold hands with a comedian who seems to be asking us to just all get along.
Which reminds me- I’ve got to pack!
