Veterans of the U.S. Military: Heroes?

It is commonplace to refer to veterans of the Vietnam War, the Afghan War, the Iraq War, the “war on terror”, as heroes.
Are Veterans heroes?
Consider the recently released classified US military video showing the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad — including two Reuters news staff and several children.
To those of you who can watch the video and still support the illegal invasion and occupation of the U.S. military in Iraq; to the Kool-Aid drinking Christian Republican conservatives out there, to the don’t tread on me, Hummer driving, steroid popping pigs amongst us, to the self congratulatory Democrats with Obama goggles so thick that you refuse to protest the Bush doctrine because it is now perpetuated by Obama- I just want to remind you that we all sprung form apes. Unfortunately you didn’t spring far enough so we’re going to have to put you back in the zoo. It’s the only safe place to observe you until you evolve.
Watching defenders of the War on Terror spin your rhetorical web is a bit like watching Planet of the Apes movies dubbed into Farsi without any English subtitles. I just can’t- given the benefits of modern life- how you people are, well, human.

Vietnam was immoral, you Ass-hats. The domino theory of spreading communism was falsified. And our government entered the war secretly and then lied to the American people and congress to escalate the war. Gulf of Tonkin… sound familiar?
So, let’s agree that war in Vietnam and the war in Iraq are of no service to our country whatsoever.

Are Veterans of those wars heroes, then?
Pilots dropping bombs over Baghdad were following orders. They were not protecting America. They are not heroes. They are victims. They signed up to serve a country they believed in, to defend democracy, or at least get some money for college and get out of their shit hole towns- and if necessary to be used as a last resort in conflict resolution. Instead, they are being used as pawns in an Armageddon chess game.
Look at the amount of unemployed in the U.S. The amount of foreclosures. The sorry state of our public education system, and other items on an ever growing list of domestic priorities and ask yourself what reasonable person can defend the expenditure of 400 million fucking dollars a day on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars?
To supporters and defenders of the war on terror, to those who blindly elevate veterans to the status of heroes, please, try evolution. It’s not just for apes anymore.

JJ – Did you see the same film as the rest of the world finally gets to see?? There were no AK 47′s or RPG’s. They were carrying cameras which noone bothered to verify. Since when do we shoot the injured and blow up a van which obviously were carrying children (you can see them in the window of the can) without any verification of where it came from..it was interesting that none of the Samaritans who came to help were carrying any kind of weapon. Insurrgents would have certainly been armed, just to protect their crew if nothing else during a rescue..this was plain incompetence if not criminal conduct, which the military should have disciplined for. These actions were in clear violation of the Law of Armed Conflict and I am sure the Rules of Engagement for this skirmish.

i agree…as someone above said, those in the van were apparently good sameritans, not insurgents, as they didn’t have weapons on them. looked to me like they were trying to help an innocent man survive…and their kids got shot out of it…i’ve been watching too many videos of our soldiers having too much fun killing people with no remorse, no value for life, no consideration for what they’re doing. I think that if those people were carrying RPG’s then he had complete right because he was in a helicopter so it’s like kill or be Killed any of us in that situation would of done the same. Whilst I agree that this war is horrendous, to call all war veterans evil and no longer heroes is a totally different matter. You’re forgetting about WW1 and WW2! and to a lesser extent I guess Vietnam, you do a disservice to your own nation if you don’t think that men fighting for what they believe is your rights are heroes. I don’t think that laughing when you’ve killed someone is right either, but I’m damn sure that in a war situation you can’t always be solemn otherwise your mind would ruin you.

You clearly 1) don’t know what it’s like to be the guy who fights the war and 2) don’t know anything about what it is that the US Army actually does (save the obvious response that amounts to “kills people” for your echo chamber wandering friends. The rest of us are smart enough to know that you talking about an Army at war and understand that people get hurt and killed by Armies…). The pilots made a judgement call. A GOOD call from where I’m sitting. So did the journalists when they decided to hang out with dudes after curfew in a combat zone who are armed with weapons that even the Iraqi Police aren’t supposed to carry (no one mentioned that… thought I’d throw it in). They made a bad call and paid the price.
I will, however, laugh my ass off with indignation at you when you state that Vietnam was immoral and that the domino theory was falsified… MILLIONS died in South Vietnam, Cambodia (read up on the Khmer Rouge?), et al. East Timor is still feeling the effects of the “falsified” Southeast Asian Domino theory… (read about the guerilla war that took place there…). You are right about one thing, though. You do drop knowledge clumsily.

War has shaped what the modern world is today. I hate war, but its a fact of life. To sum up all of our veterans as being animalistic is undeserving of honor is completely ignorant. Sure there are stupid soldiers who commit evil acts, but what about the rest? what about the soldiers that fight do defend their country? what about them? Sure you can say that the Gov. schemes and lies and is only out for itself, but in the end is it really right to categorize veterans as dishonorable? as animalistic?

My father was killed by a suicide bomber in 2005. He rejoined the army to help train the police in iraq and help them give stability to their country. One morning he was having breakfast with friends and IP’s and a suicide bomber came in and killed him and several others as well as civilians. I love how everyone justifies the enemies intentions and crucifies our own soldiers who are just answering the americans cry for blood for blood. When we were attacked we were all mad and wanted vengence. Iraq was not responsible but they were harboring terrorists and funding them. You dont think that we dont know about loss or hurt from cowards strapping bombs on themselves or hijacking a plane and killing innocents. The Iraq people are lucky we didnt completly destroy them. And second, the video is not only about a helicopter killing suspects, is about a helicopter killing EVERYONE including a van full of people without visible arms or intentions to attack that were trying to help a wounded man, that was like shooting and ambulance and is obviously murder. Why do you think the US is so actively pursuing the “war on terror?” It is more rightly called “wars for resources”. All the Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, etc, business shows is to what lengths we will go to to secure energy stores. I am waiting to see what lasting good our excursions into countries and arming them or killing them does. How can it make friends with their populace? Jesus Christ….1) THe men gathering were armed so if they were not insurgents and then that means the only legal use would be the Iraqi Army or Police which are under American control so they would have been known to them. 2) Saeed who ran on the first shots went futher into the rubble than it shows when the guy ran him over and it cleary says it could be a illusion. 3) The van pulled up and after that engagment it can only be rightly assumed they were insurgents. I for one watched the full video first then the short version and my eye as if I was an apache pilot (which am currently training for) was drawn to the pickup of the bodies and never noticed the children in the car. My father bieng a policeman who visits all sorts of horrific accidents and my commrades currently out there all say: “If you cant laugh some of it off or justify it then it will really get to you”

Just another example of the US “heros”. They do not have to kill people, they choose to. Our whole fucking nation is set up just to fuck people over. The smart people go to school and learn that this is wrong and fight against it. The dumb fucks drop out and join the military. There they are the governments puppets, outside of the laws. All the propaganda shows us that they are heros when really they are doing the governments dirty work. Fuck off all you dumb fucks saying that they are heros.
